Post-tensioning design delivers cost savings & extra seats at award-winning new stadium

Walsh was delighted to be invited to join with Morrisroe for the concrete frame package at Tottenham Hotspurā€™s new stadium. Beneath the vast steel and glass canopy lies a substantial concrete frame which forms the seating, the hospitality, circulation spaces, retail and facilities for this iconic stadium.

Walsh took on the role of post-tensioned slab designer which involved heavy coordination and design development role with the main client team, led by Buro Happold and MACE. The design was complex due to the shape of the structure and the exposed conditions, so our skill in post-tensioned design enabled cost savings on materials as well as extra space for seats and important hospitality areas.

The typical floors utilised 275mm 10m span post-tensioned slabs but also required detailed design of cantilever post-tensioned support beams for the precast seating. Sequencing of works also became a critical design item as the stadium was built around the old stadium and other site constraints.

Our leading role in the post-tensioned design was recognised in 2017 as the scheme won best post-tension development that year at the Concrete Society Awards.
