Located within the Birmingham Big City Plan target development area in central Birmingham, The Beorma Quarter Tower is built opposite the prominent Bullring and the listed Grade II* St Martinās Church. At the centre of the development there will be a new public square called āOrwell Placeā linking the Bullring to the Northwest and Allison Street to the South. The Towerās architecture is linked to the original use of the land as burgage plots during early settlements of Birmingham.
The Tower will provide commercial spaces at ground floor, with grade A office accommodation above. At the upper floors more than 140 new homes will be created.
The structural scheme was driven by the architectural aspiration to create a high specification development. The largely clear internal spans compliment the architectural open plan layouts of the office floors. Similarly the absence of any internal columns at the residential levels allows full flexibility for future flat layouts. The entire scheme is based on flat slab construction simplifying the coordination and routing of services. The structural frame compliments the external facade which follows the burgage plot line and is a prominent design feature of the tower.
Walsh worked closely with the Frame Contractor to deliver the basement and the superstructure frame in their bespoke and integrated construction solutions including precast concrete manufactured off-site such as the RC columns and basement retaining wall panels, hybrid PT slab solution.
